Nancy Pelosi visits Curry Senior Center!

Curry Senior Center Executive Director Dave Knego introduces John Gressman, President and C.E.O. of the SFCCC and Speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi on August 11th, 2010.

...in honor of National Health Center Week, Curry Senior Center was the site of this year’s celebration organized by the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium (SFCCC). The SFCCC provides primary care services to over 70,000 San Franciscans each year through it’s 11 clinics.

The purpose of the event was to celebrate the community health care movement and the uninsured, low-income, working poor and homeless patients it serves. The audience was also treated to a "how it was done" presentation on the passage of health care reform, from none other than Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. Speaker Pelosi detailed events leading up to the bills passage - "that not everyone got exactly what they wanted," but that most importantly, the bill passed. She shared events from her childhood in Baltimore with the crowd, and shared the opinion that the highest calling in life was to serve people who need the most help. She mentioned how Barack Obama told her that if the passage of health care reform meant he was only a one-term President, so be-it, as Health Care Reform was so important. She left the audience with a speech she recalls from her early-adulthood, that of President Kennedy's inauguration that the future, and change, is a responsibility of everyone - and that Health Care Reform is also everyone’s responsibility because we are all affected.

John Gressman, Executive Director of Community Clinic Consortium, followed Representative Pelosi's speech with a general review of Health Care Reform's main points. He began his speech by saying there are still many changes to be worked out as health care is implemented over the next several years, such as fine-tuning the rules, timelines and eligibility requirements.
